CORFU. Pilot programme for the Corfu Cup system at selected cafes in November.
Reuse is one of the ways in which we can reduce the use of plastic, which is a major factor in the destruction of the environment. The MEDfreeSUP (Mediterranean free of Single Use Plastic) project aims to reduce the use of plastic in our daily lives.
To avoid using single use plastic, we use our own cup. But what happens if we forget it at home?
The Corfu Cup system is being implemented in a pilot programme at selected cafes in November as part of the MEDfreeSUP project, co-funded by EIT Climate - KIC.
The businesses taking part in the pilot programme are as follows:
- Kefenion Koultoura (Donzelot 25, next to the old Courthouse)
- Starenio Bakery (Gilford 59)
- Briki Pantokafenes (Erotokritou Moraiti 16, opposite the Police HQ)
- Ankoretto Cafe (Gouvia Marina)
- Skippers Cafe Wine Bar (Gouvia Marina)
From today until the end of November, we have the option of 'renting' the returnable porcelain Corfu Cup!
When you order your coffee with the Corfu Cup -
- Rent the cup for €5
- Keep it for as long as you want
- Whenever you want, return the cup to participating cafes and get back your €5!
The business cleans and disinfects the cup ready for the next user.
You can see the participating cafes here: www.corfucup.eu
MEDfreeSUP is a 2-year project which aims to create a methodology to provide support for municipalities and catering and tourist businesses in Meditteranean coastal and island regions in reducing and eliminating single use plastic.
The following are participating in the project:
Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality, Corfu Chamber of Commerce, Corfu Catering Association, Corfu Hoteliers Association and the Ionian Islands Environmental Foundation.
In Greece, the project is supported by 'Athena' Research Centre and is co-funded by the EU EIT Climate - KIC.
