National awards for paintings by two Corfu schoolgirls

CORFU. Katerina Kousouni won 1st prize and Maria Tsirigaki won 3rd in the ΄Covid-19 pupils and distance΄ competition organised by the Youth Department of the Hellenic Red Cross.
Two talented Corfu schoolgirls impressed the judges in the National Art Competition organised by the Youth Department of the Hellenic Red Cross. The subject was ΄Covid-19 pupils and distance΄ and the works by the two girls won 1st and 3rd prizes out of 160 participants.
In the secondary school category 13-year-old Katerina Kousouni from Agios Ioannis Junior High won 1st prize and 14-year-old Maria Tsirigaki from Corfu 7th Junior High won 3rd. The two pupils will receive their awards at a special event taking place at Athens Numismatics Museum on 3 July.
Innate talent
Katerina's mother Anneta Grammenou said that her daughter loves painting and has been taking painting lessons for the last three years. Her parents realised that she had an innate talent when she painted a wonderful portrait of Ioannis Capodistrias several years ago in primary school.
"We discovered her talent suddenly when she was in the 2nd year of primary school," said Ms. Grammenou. "At the end of the year we received a box with all the work she had done over the year and we saw this portrait. That's when we realised that she had talent and we tried to support her by buying paintbrushes and paints so that she could paint as much as she wanted." She added that she also received an honorable mention in an online painting exhibition organised by the Panhellenic Literature & Art Society.
Katerina already has a collection of 80 works - canvas, water colours, engravings and sketches - and says she likes to copy the works of great artists such as Monet.
The painting that won 1st prize is impressive. It depicts a young schoolgirl trapped behind barbed wire trying to escape. Half of her face is covered by a mask, there are tears in her eyes and she is trying to escape from the pandemic and get close to her friends but is unable to. The other half shows coronavirus bodies.
According to Ms.Grammenou, her painting will be made into a poster and put up in all the Red Cross youth centres throughout Greece.
She has been painting since she was 5 years old
14-year-old Maria Tsirigaki started painting when she was 5 years old. Since then she has continued to impress with her art. She mainly paints nature and animals and loves to create special works of art.
Her painting that won 3rd prize shows a schoolgirl wearing a mask during the pandemic. She is thinking of when she was with her friends before coronavirus, when they were free to hug and take photos together.
Her mother Irene said it is the first time that 14-year-old Maria has won a prize and it is a great distinction for her.
