CORFU. 80 bicycles will be available free from Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality every day.

On the occasion of World Bicycle Day two Corfu women cyclists who have made cycling a way of life were presented with awards by Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality today at the San Giacomo Old Town Hall with representatives from the Cycling Club also present.

85-year-old Mary Paipeti began cycling 65 years ago and still uses a bike to get around. She was overjoyed and deeply moved today. "I went to work and brought up my family and was busy from morning to night," she said. "I had to have a means of transport and this was my bike. I have always loved it as it makes me feel free. I am 85 years old but I have strong legs and memory thanks to my bike. It was my first wage."

Maria Skordili also talked about the benefits of cycling and said that parents should instil a love for it in their children so that they get away from their computer screens and electronic devices. "I adore my bike and I don't go anywhere without it," she said. "The only disadvantage is that car drivers don't show proper respect. You can do everything with a bike. Unfortunately, we don't use it in our lives. For me, the bike is my other half as long as I can get around."

Deputy Mayor for Culture Chrysoula Tombrou presented the awards. She announced that 80 bikes will be available free to members of the public every day. They will be available outside San Giacomo Old Town Hall from 09:00 to 13:30 and all that is required is your ID.
