Greek President to be made an honorary citizen of Corfu

CORFU. The programme of events for the Greek President΄s visit to Corfu for the anniversary of the Unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece.
The President is arriving at Corfu Airport this afternoon in an Air Force aircraft to attend the two-day celebrations for the 157th anniversary of the Unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece.
This evening Ms. Sakellaropoulou will meet with the Ionian Islands university principals at the Ionian Academy following which she will go to Platytera Monastery for a service and to lay a wreath at the tomb of Ioannis Capodistrias, the first Governor of Modern Greece.
The President will then return to the Ionian Academy for celebratory event "157 Years since the Unification of the Ionian Islands" organised by the Ionian Islands Regional Administration. The Minister of Interior Makis Voridis will also be present representing the government.
There will then follow an official dinner in honour of the Greek President.
Friday 21 May
Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality has announced the following programme for Friday 21 May:
11:30 - The Greek President will attend the service at Church of Agios Spyridon led by Nektarios, Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos and Diapontia Islands.
12:00 - Presentation at the Ionian Parliament by Municipal Council President Dimitris Metallinos on the subject "1821 to 1864".
12:30 - Laying of wreaths at the Ionian Islands Unification Monument and one minute's silence in memory of those who fought for the Unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece.
The President will then go to the Palace of St. Michael and St. George for an official ceremony making her and honorary citizen of Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality.
Ms. Sakellaropoulou will then visit the opening of the exhibition "Echoes of the Struggle" for the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution at the Municipal Art Gallery.
