CORFU. Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou met with the former Catholic Archbishop Ioannis Spitieris at the Old Town Hall this afternoon.
The Mayor invited the former Catholic Archbishop so that she could thank him for his services on the island as Archbishop and in particular for his efforts to restore the bell tower of the former Catholic 'Annunziata' Church.
The project, as is known, has become part of the 'Ionian Islands 2014-2020' Business Programme.
Ms. Ydraiou said that the monument is a landmark in European history as the remains of Christian soldiers from all over Europe were buried there after the Lepanto Battle of Nafpaktos.
Ioannis Spitieris thanked the Mayor for the invitation and expressed his satisfaction that he will see the restoration of the Annunziata bell tower come to fruition. He presented his plan for the creation of a monument to the 'European Unknown Soldier' honouring the memory and sacrifices of the European Christians who gave their lives at the Battle of Nafpaktos to prevent the Ottoman Empire from prevailing.
