CORFU. The proposal from Giorgos Karydis was passed unanimously at last night΄s Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipal Council meeting.
At last night's meeting in the Municipal Theatre the Municipal Council voted unanimously in favour of the proposal from 'Kerkyraiki Symmahia' leader Giorgos Karydis regarding the concession of Corfu Town seafront zone to the Municipality.
The decision agreed upon states that the Municipality will request that the Minister of Finance complete the seafront concession procedure immediately with a legislative vote.
Giorgos Karydis underlined that this was necessary so that the Municipality can go ahead with a series of projects to the benefit of locals and visitors and NAOK (Corfu Sailing Club) can have a permanent base rather remain in uncertainty.
The proposal was passed by the Council but the 'LA.SY' party expressed its concerns that the development of the seafront must be of benefit to the many not the few - something that isn't guaranteed with the present local authority, as exemplified by the exclusion from the discussion of the section where Corfu Port Authority is involved.
According to 'LA.SY' the seafront is a part of Corfu Town and aesthetic and functional improvements, the optimum utilisation of existing infrastructure and the addition of new facilities are absolutely necessary to satisfy the needs of the people for free, open public spaces with green areas, children's playgrounds, recreation, sport and sea sports, cultural and educational activities as well as showcasing the architecture and cultural heritage.
