CORFU. "My position is clear - the Waste Management facility should be put out to tender immediately."
In response to the statement on TV by Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos that the new Mayor is trying to delay issuing the invitations for tender for the Integrated Waste Management facility, Meropi Ydraiou issued the following statement:
"The false allegations of Mr. Nikolouzos do not even deserve a denial. It is obvious that the outgoing Mayor belongs to yesterday's people - those who have taken Corfu back in time and were condemned by the public.
I would like to state clearly and categorically:
1. I am trying to speed up the process of issuing the invitations for tender for the facility. Only someone foolish would choose to start the whole process over from the beginning again and leave Corfu in complete limbo.
2. I stressed the need for the process to be speeded up both to the former Minister Mr. Famellos and to the person responsible for the preparing the study. There is no time to lose.
3. When we presented out programme at the Municipal Theatre I talked of the need to construct the facility and the representative of our party Mr. Kalogeros voted for the funding to be given to SYDISA.
What everyone needs to understand and accept is that Corfu chose a new Mayor who is responsible and not irresponsible as some were in the past. She believes in practical and realistic solutions to the issue of waste management, free of dogma and personal strategies. This is what the vast majority of local residents of all political persuasions who support us demands.
I will be the Mayor during whose term of office the new Waste Management facility will be constructed and become operational.
We begin work on 1 September - responsibly, with a plan and unceasing effort to get Corfu out of the dead end that yesterday's people led it into."
