Large number of refuse trucks out of action - rubbish piling up again

CORFU. The problems at the Municipal Cleansing Service remind one of the Hydra Monster and rubbish is piling up the roadside throughout the island.
The recent accident with a refuse truck overturning - fortunately without causing any injuries - highlighted the problems that exist with the Municipal vehicles such as MOT certification, installation of ABS and other long-term outstanding issues that haven't been dealt with.
As a consequence of the publicity that the accident created immediate action is now being taken to deal with outstanding problems. Until this is done, however, half of the fleet is off the road and out of action in the middle of the tourist season and the increased refuse.
Meanwhile, the new personnel is not expected to start work before the end of August and as regards the private contractors, the Inspection Committee is examining the documentation before contracts are signed - approval is expected shortly (?).
With one thing and another Corfu seems to be 'cursed' with the never-ending rubbish problems.
