THESSALONIKI. The Corfu Mayoral candidate Meropi Ydraiou attended the opening of the Environmental Education & Reciprocal Recycling Park in Lagada, Thessaloniki.

Corfu Mayoral candidate Meropi Ydraiou said that her party's first priority is to adopt the best practices in waste management and recycling used in other Greek Municipalities and in Europe. To this end she attended the opening of the Environmental Education & Reciprocal Recycling Park in Lagada, Thessaloniki, which is the second in Greece and in Europe.

Ms. Ydraiou was invited by the Mayor of Lagada Yiannis Karayiannis and EU official Giorgos Kremlis, who is head of the European Committee for the circular economy and islands. She learnt about how the Park operates and can develop - the facility is one that Corfu could have in the immediate future. For this to happen, however, and to clean up Corfu, there need to be people in the Municipality who are knowledgeable, willing and have well-prepared studies - not those who have failed in the past.

The Environmental Education & Reciprocal Recycling Park started as a pilot scheme at the former Bareti Barracks in Lagada, Thessaloniki in a deprived and abandoned area which thus acquired a new significance. Its aim is the environmental education of both young in order to increase recycling as well as raise general awareness of the subject.

Special reciprocal recycling units have been set up in the Park where members of the public can deposit recyclable materials, plastic, aluminium and glass and they automatically receive a receipt coupon which tells them the value of what they have deposited and which they can use for purchases at certain supermarkets or donate to charity.

Ms. Ydraiou said "It's time for Corfu, which is at the tailend of recycling, to adopt the best practices used in other municipalities.

Corfu doesn't just need an Environmentl Education & Reciprocal Recycling Park, which can be set up immediately. It needs an integrated programme for recycling and cleansing.

We will be presenting our programme "Clean Corfu" at an open event for everyone. There are solutions. We just need to trust those who know and who are willing and able - not those who have had their chance and failed. We need those who have ideas, proposals and plans - not those who are from the past.

Whatever has been done in other municipalities in Greece and in Europe can be done by us as well - in cooperation, methodically and with proper planning. All of us together - public and municipality - can make a New Start."
