Global scientific recognition for Corfu olive oil “The Governor”

An extremely important scientific discovery has been published in the prestigious international scientific journal Nutrients. The new preclinical study, conducted at the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM), demonstrates that oleocanthal, the main phenolic compound found in extra virgin olive oil, can effectively control and inhibit metastasis in aggressive forms of colorectal cancer (KRASG13D mutation) in laboratory animals.

The research was based on the award-winning Corfu high-phenolic olive oil “The Governor,” produced by the Dafnis family (Olive Fabrica). The results showed that daily oral administration of oleocanthal derived from this particular olive oil significantly limited the growth of the primary tumour and prevented metastasis, acting through the gut microbiome.

The study was led by internationally renowned Professor of Pharmacy Dr. Khalid A. El Sayed, together with Dr. Hassan Y. Ebrahim and Towhidul Islam Tarun. The researchers have spent years studying the molecular effects of natural compounds found in the Mediterranean diet against cancer cells.

According to Professor of Pharmacy at the National and Capodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Prokopis Magiatis: “Since 2016, ‘The Governor’ olive oil has been recognised every year as one of the world’s leading health-protective olive oils by the World Olive Center for Health, and it has been selected for dozens of clinical and preclinical studies in Greece and the United States.”

Mr. Spyros Dafnis, owner of Olive Fabrica and producer of “The Governor” olive oil, said:

This study paves the way for the use of high-phenolic olive oil as a “functional food” in supportive and preventive medicine, strengthening the position of Corfu and Greece on the global map of health and science.
