Significant seismic activity reported in Ioannina: earthquakes of 4.6 and 4.7 magnitude
CORFU. The tremors were felt in Corfu.
Two successive earthquakes occurred today, Friday, March 20, within a span of a few minutes. The tremors were particularly noticeable on Corfu, causing alarm due to their duration and intensity.
11:05:30 – First tremor: Magnitude 4.6 Richter, with an epicentre 7.2 km northwest of Tyria, Ioannina, and a focal depth of 20.3 kilometres.
11:40:44 – Second tremor: Occurred 35 minutes later and was stronger, measuring 4.7 Richter. The epicentre was located 11.9 km northwest of Tyria, while the focal depth was only 5.0 kilometres.
Although the epicentre was inland in Epirus, the earthquakes were strongly felt in Corfu. The short distance from the coast of Thesprotia and the shallow focal depth of the second earthquake contributed to the residents of the island feeling a pronounced shaking.
