Garitsa cemetery hit by tornado
CORFU. Announcement from Central Corfu Municipality.
The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands reports that during the severe weather on the night of November 20, a localised tornado struck the 1st Municipal Cemetery of Corfu, uprooting or splitting in half seven centuries-old cypress trees. The storm caused extensive damage to over 100 graves.
Fortunately, the destruction was confined to the second section of the cemetery. The first section, which houses the monumental tombs, remained unharmed.
Municipal teams and relevant services immediately conducted on-site inspections to record and assess the damage. Removal of fallen trees has already begun to clear the area and ensure safe access for visitors.
Once the damage has been fully documented and restoration costs evaluated, the Municipality will proceed with all necessary legal procedures.
