28th October parade in Corfu Town

CORFU. Pupils carried the blue-and-white Greek flag as they commemorated OXI Day.

The parade commemorating the national anniversary of October 28, 1940, was held in Corfu Town today.

The parade, proceeding along Agoniston Polytechniou, Anapiron, and Thymaton Polemou streets up to the Old Palace, began at 12:15 p.m. It featured university and school students, Guides, Scouts, units of the Armed Forces, the Hellenic Police, the Coast Guard, the Fire Service, and Border Guard units, accompanied by the philharmonic bands Philharmonic Society of Corfu, Mantzaros, Spyros Samaras, and Capodistrias, marching in traditional order.

Early in the morning, the philharmonic bands played marches in the streets of the town, while the flag was raised at the New Fortress with the participation of a philharmonic band and a military unit.

The official service followed at the Metropolitan Church, led by the Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos, and the Diapontian Islands, Nektarios. At 11:30 a.m., a memorial service was held, followed by the laying of wreaths at the war memorial. The anniversary celebration concluded with the parade.
