Ionian Islands Development Conference begins 17 October

CORFU. The Ionian Islands Development Conference will take place from October 17 to 19 in Corfu, with the Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, attending.

(Ionian Islands Regional Authority) The Ionian Islands Regional Authority, in collaboration with the Ionian University and with the support of the Regional Development Fund as well as the institutional and productive bodies of the area, is organising the Ionian Islands Development Conference, titled “Ionian Islands: Path and Development Goals”, from Friday, October 17 to Sunday, October 19, at the Ionian Academy.

The conference represents an important initiative for dialogue and strategic planning, aiming to shape a modern, sustainable, and innovative development model for the Ionian Islands.

Conference Opening

The conference proceedings will begin on Friday, October 17, with the opening declaration by the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Yiannis Trepeklis, and the Dean of the Ionian University, Andreas Floros.

Greetings will be delivered, among others, by the Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, the Deputy Minister of Shipping & Island Policy, Stefanos Gikas, the Member of the European Parliament, Nikos Farantouris, the Dean of the University of Piraeus, Michail Sfakianakis, the President of the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO), Angeliki Varela, and the Vice President of the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels, Christina Tetradi.

The first day will conclude with a keynote address by the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands and a welcome reception.

Thematic sections

During the conference, critical issues will be presented and discussed, relating to:

  • The Development of the Primary and Secondary Sectors

  • Climate Change and the Environment

  • Sustainable Tourism

  • Infrastructure and Connectivity

  • Social Cohesion and Human Capital

  • Digital Upgrade, Innovation, and Financial Tools

Distinguished scientists, academics, institutional representatives, and entrepreneurs will participate, presenting specific proposals and best practices for the development of the Ionian Islands.

Consultation with the public

On Sunday, October 19, the programme will culminate with an open discussion and consultation with the public and institutions of the region, as well as a round table on infrastructure, climate change, and the institutional framework.

The conference will conclude with the address and closing remarks of the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Yiannis Trepekli.

Conference objective

The objective of the Ionian Islands Development Conference is to highlight the role of the Ionian Islands as a model of sustainable and multi-level development, through the collaboration of all societal forces: local government, science, entrepreneurship, and the local community.
