The annual memorial on Vidos Island for the Serbian soldiers who died in Corfu between 1916 and 1918 was held once again this year.
The Serbian government paid tribute at the highest level, with Prime Minister Djuro Macut in attendance, accompanied by key cabinet members: Defence Minister Bratislav Gasic, Labour Minister Milica Djurdjevic Stamenkovski, and Deputy Labour Minister Zoran Antić.
Representing the municipality, Deputy Mayor for Culture Nikos Vradis and Deputy Mayor for Cleaning Services Pantelis Giannoulis were in attendance. Also present were Regional Governor Yiannis Trepeklis, North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris, Archbishop Nektarios, and representatives of the Armed Forces, Police, Coast Guard, Fire Service, the Serbian Embassy, and the Serbian Armed Forces, along with a large number of members of the public.
Stefanos Poulimenos, in his address, stated among other things:
“Our relationship with Serbia has not remained in the past; it endures and thrives. The establishment of the Serbian Museum in Corfu, the twinning with cities such as Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Kruševac, the annual presence of students from Serbia in our region – all these testify that our friendship is not a historical shadow but a living and lasting reality. A friendship that has never been based on interests, but on solidarity and a shared destiny.”
