CORFU. The two animals had been left for months in a locked-up shop.
Their ‘owner’ had left pet food for the animals in the tiny shop and locals had noticed the cat in there since the end of August.
Members of the Ark – the animal welfare organization in Corfu - contacted the police and the public prosecutor on 30 November, who tried repeatedly, but unsuccessfully, to contact the owner.
Eventually, the police gave the order to break the lock in the presence of the prosecutor. When they entered the shop they found that, as well as the cat, there was also a small dog and the small room was full of their excrement and other rubbish. The smell was unbearable.
The cat, for which an owner has already been found, hid and at the time of writing they still hadn’t managed to retrieve it. The dog will be taken to a vet, who will check for illnesses and parasites. It will be given the necessary care and then the Ark will try to find someone to adopt it.
The abuse of animals by neglect is a criminal offence, which is why the police and the prosecutor were involved.
