CORFU. It has caused shock that the man who treated his dogs so cruelly is a hunter.
The man who treated the two setters so cruelly in Lefkimmi on Monday night is a hunter - someone who supposedly has a special relationship with dogs.
The person in question is a member of South Corfu Hunting Association, the members of which are appalled and have condemned the incident and are preparing to issue a statement.
The President of Central Corfu Hunting Association has also condemned the incident, which he considers completely unacceptable. He told Enimerosi: "Even though he isn't a member of our Association, I condemn his behaviour and consider it completely unacceptable that he treated the two dogs so cruelly in Lefkimmi on Monday night. It is well-known how much hunters love their dogs.
He must make a public apology - as a hunter he is giving the whole hunting community a bad name," said Giorgos Mavropoulos.
"We believe that the laws that exist are sufficient and it is now a matter for the justice system.
"If he were a member of our Association, he would brought before a disciplinary committee tomorrow morning in order to consider temporary or permanent suspension.
"I am truly saddened by the fact that this person is a hunter. I feel sorry for the animals. I don't feel at all sorry for him as he did what he did deliberately!
"I feel ashamed for him," said the Corfu Hunting Association President. "As he feels no shame and treats animals in this way, I and all the hunting community will have to be ashamed on his behalf!"
