CORFU. The Ionian Islands and Western Greece Union of Licensed Tourist Guides has announced a work stoppage on Thursday, July 11, from 09:00 to 13:00, and will gather at the entrance of the Old Fortress at 10:00.

The Ionian Islands and Western Greece Union of Licensed Tourist Guides has announced that they will participate in the nationwide 24-hour strike called by the Panhellenic Federation of Tourist Guides for Thursday, July 11, from 06:00 to 20:00. The reason for the strike is the submission of a bill by the Ministry of Tourism which, according to the Federation, "among other things, limits the work of guides to enclosed and restricted spaces with its proposed definition, despite the fact that Greece's history, attractions, and culture are not 'confined.' At the same time, the efforts and proposals of the guides to strengthen the control of illegal guiding activities are being ignored, while even the work of the Guide School is being downgraded."

The demands of the Panhellenic Federation of Guides are:

a) the recognition of the significantly multifaceted and multi-dimensional role of the guide, through our proposals for its definition.

b) the quality education and training of Guides: upgrading the Guide Schools, reducing the annual maximum possible number of two-month intensive seminars, and abolishing the possibility of conducting them by Lifelong Learning Centres.

c) the eradication of the phenomenon of illegal guiding.

Additionally, the Union of Licensed Guides of the Ionian Islands and Western Greece, by decision of the Board of Directors and in accordance with current legislation, announces a Work Stoppage, also on Thursday, July 11, 2024, from 09:00 to 13:00, with a gathering at the entrance of the Old Fortress at 10:00.
