Man arrested in Igoumenitsa with 225kg unprocessed cannabis

A man was arrested at Igoumenitsa Port late on Thursday night, 11 April.

During a targeted inspection involving personnel from the Regional Drugs Squad, the K9 Unit, and Igoumenitsa Central Port Authority, 22 boxes were found in the cargo area of a truck that had been unloaded from a ferry originating from Italy. These boxes contained two hundred (200) plastic packages of unprocessed hydroponic cultivation cannabis (Skunk), with a total gross weight of 225.88 kg.

The drugs were located using the sniffer dog Vlad. 

A search was also conducted at the residence of the apprehended individual in Chios by personnel from the Regional Drugs Squad, the Security Office, and the  Chios Port Authority Special Missions Unit with the assistance of the sniffer dog Neda. During the search, one nylon package containing unprocessed cannabis with a total weight of 11.8 grams, a precision scale, a plastic grinder, the sum of 5,000 Euros, hydroponic cultivation equipment, and a mobile phone were found.

All of the aforementioned items were confiscated by Chios Port Authority and Igoumenitsa Central Port Authority.

The 54-year-old driver of the truck is scheduled to be brought to appear before the Thesprotia Prosecutor.

The value of the confiscated drugs is estimated to be up to €1,807,040.
