Horse and carriage owner arrested for taking horse out in high temperatures
CORFU. A member of the public reported him to the police.
A carriage driver was apprehended this afternoon following a complaint from a member of the public.
The person reporting the incident livestreamed a horse-drawn carriage which was on the road, engaging in a sightseeing tour in high temperatures, despite the fact that it is prohibited.
Following the complaint, the police went to the scene to check and arrested the driver.
According to a relevant circular from the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, it is prohibited for horses to work on days when temperatures range from 35°C to 39°C in the shade, especially during the hours between 12:00 and 17:00.
On days of extreme heat with temperatures exceeding 39°C, the work of animals is prohibited throughout the entire day.
Furthermore, these animals are required to have free access to natural shade or shelter and a continuous supply of water throughout the 24-hour period.
Regarding the transportation of animals, it is to be done under full protection during extreme weather conditions, and when temperatures inside the garages of passenger and cargo ships exceed 35°C, the transportation of animals without air conditioning is not allowed.
