Greek PM announces General Election on Sunday 21 May
The elections will be held on Sunday 21 May and if a second round is necessary, it will take place no later than early July.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that elections will be held on May 21st, during his introductory statement at a cabinet meeting.
"The country and citizens need clear horizons," he said. "The elections will take place at the end of the four-year term, on Sunday, May 21st, and if a second round is necessary, it will take place no later than early July," emphasising that this schedule is "completely consistent with the provisions of the Constitution."
"The first ballot will determine who will govern and the second how they will govern," he added.
"An autonomous New Democracy means a strong Greece," he continued, estimating that "citizens will be called upon to judge readiness in crisis management as well as sincerity. The people will weigh matters up and I am sure they will decide correctly."
"Our slogan from now on is: we move forward together, changing Greece more uncompromisingly and more boldly."
