Corfu Airport
20 Dec 2022 / 20:01

CORFU. "Will there be cooperation with the responsible state bodies in order to cover the needs of the 120,000 permanent residents?"

The Corfu PASOK-KINAL MP Dimitris Biangis sent a letter to Fraport asking for information regarding the closure of the airport due to resurfacing work:

Dear Sirs,

We would like to ask you, as the management company of the Corfu Ioannis Capodistrias Airport, to inform the people of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontia Islands through us about the decisions you have taken, which, as it has become known, concern the operation of Corfu Airport from 10 January 2023 to 24 January 2023.

The local community should be informed in time of your decisions, i.e. whether it has actually been decided to close the airport for the abovementioned period in order to carry out the necessary work to renovate the runway.

It should also know in time whether there will be any cooperation with the responsible state bodies in order to cover the needs of the 120,000 permanent residents of the area for the abovementioned period.

Knowing that no such agreement or discussion has been done with the local bodies of the island, we hope that you have at least planned, in cooperation with the Ministries and the responsible state services, everything that is deemed necessary for the society's needs.

In any case, and given that maintenance, restoration and resurfacing work had been carried out on the runway in the past in one section at a time in order to not cause any problems, please inform us of the following:

- Has your company informed and consulted the responsible Ministries and local bodies of the island about such a serious decision in order to examine all possible options before deciding to close the airport?

- Have decisions been taken and is there a plan for any emergencies that may arise during the period that the airport will remain closed?

- Have the responsible bodies been informed? If so, have they planned solutions with you for airlifts that may need to take place during the period in question, what is this planning and what exactly does it provide for?

- Do you intend to inform the local community about the work to be carried out with all that entails for the daily lives of citizens, and if so, when and how?

- Has your company considered the solution of carrying out the runway surfacing one section at a time as it was done in the past so that flights with smaller aircraft can continue without any problems, at least for domestic flights?

- Is your company planning to take a similar decision to close the airport in February as well?

- What is your company planning to do with the airport staff during the period in question?

Hoping that there will be an immediate response to the questions raised, I thank you in advance.

Yours faithfully,

Dimitris Biangis
