CORFU. The defibrillators will be installed immediately.

Mayor Meropi Ydraiou anounced at a press conference today that Central Corfu Municipality has received 18 defibrillators to be installed in secondary school yards where sports activities take place.

Also at the press conference were the President of the Secondary Education Committee Kostas Kostalis, Deputy Mayor Andreas Skoupouras, municipal councillor responsible for education Maria Zervou, Deputy Mayor Spyros Poulis and the President of Corfu Ambulance Service Employees Union Christos Kypriotis.

Ms. Ydraiou said that when the schools are closed in summer the defibrillators will be taken and installed at suitable locations in town and in tourist areas so as to be available for residents and visitors.

The President of the Secondary Education Committee Kostas Kostalis said: "Something that we have wanted for a long time is now being implemented. The defibrillators are here and from Monday they will be in the schools. This was a unanimous decision by the committee and we are pleased to have Mr. Poulis on the committee who advised us on the purchase of the equipment. There was a delay in receiving the equipment as there was a lack of availability."

He added that the 18 defibrillators will be in addition to all the others that have been purchased by the committee and cost €1,500 each including the box in which it is stored and the spares.

The installation of defibrillators in schools and other key public locations in the municipality is to help prevent serious health incidents.

Ms. Zervou said that, with the aid of technology, we must prevent such incidents in public areas and added that the committee has full legal status with the local authority.

Mr. Kypriotis said that Ambulance Service paramedics will provide full training on the use of the equipment in schools and Deputy Mayor Andreas Skoupouras added that the municipality will be purchasing another 20 defibrillators.
