CORFU. Houses are being broken into in broad daylight in the search for money and valuables.

There has been a significant increase in thefts and burglaries in North Corfu this summer and the perpetrators have even been breaking into houses in broad daylight.

Peroulades, Velonades, Karousades, Dafni, Agios Spyridonas and Roda are just some of the areas that have been targetted. North Corfu Deputy Mayor Theofanis Skebras told Enimerosi that the number of incidents in North Corfu is unprecedented and are being investigated by the police.

"Over the last month there have been incidents of burglary in isolated houses in broad daylight," he said. "The burglars watch the houses and when the owners leave in the morning to go to work, they go in and do their business. There has not been a lot about it and in general residents are not too concerned as they consider the incidents to be scattered." He believes that North Corfu has been targetted as the thieves consider it to be an 'easy' area.

Over 10-12 burglaries

Mr. Skebris said that he knew of over 10-12 incidents of burglary in North Corfu. The thieves are very specific in what they are after - money and valuables. "They are not at all interested in electronic appliances, such as laptops," he said. "They are looking for money and valuables and they have no problem in turning the house upside down in search of them."

Investigations

At the moment there is no official figure for the number of burglaries in North Corfu. However, Corfu Police Department is looking into the incidents that have been reported and the local police stations are conducting investigations. Coordinated actions are also being taken to prevent the phenomena both in town and around the island involving all the police departments.
