Ionian Islands police checks - 191 driving offences and 27 arrests over weekend

CORFU. Police in Corfu, Zakynthos, Cephalonia and Lefkada carried out checks between 18:00 on 28 May and 02:00 on 29 May.

Between 18:00 on 28 May and 02:00 on 29 May police in Corfu, Zakynthos, Cephalonia and Lefkada carried out checks for the following:

- Theft and burglary
- Dangerous driving
- Violations of regulations at catering establishments
- Drug dealing
- Illegal immigrants

576 vehicles and 671 individuals were checked, leading to 27 arrests - 14 in Zakynthos, 5 in Lefkada, 4 in Corfu and 4 in Cephalonia - for the following offences:

- 8 for driving without a licence
- 6 without health certificate at catering establishments
- 1 for playing music outside legal time
- 5 for illegal residency
- 2 for driving under the influence
- 1 for drugs
- 1 for illegal trading
- 3 for illegal possession and selling of laughing gas capsules in Lagana, Zakynthos

There were 191 driving offences, including the following:

- 27 speeding
- 9 driving under the influence
- 5 not wearing seat belts
- 29 not wearing crash helmet
- 6 using mobile phone whilst driving
- 22 without driving licences
- 1 uninsured
- 5 without MOT

Police seized various products being sold illegally, small quantities of cocaine and unprocessed cannabis, 72 capsules and balloons with laughing gas, 730 Euros and 400 UK Pounds.

There were also 6 smoking violations at catering establishments.
