CORFU. "We need an immediate update on when the Lower Square car park will reopen."

There has been strong reaction to the local authority's decision to close the car park in Liston in order to install an automated parking system.

'Voice - Citizens for Transparency' issued the following statement:

"Yet again, we remain speechless at the way the local authority is managing the situation with the Lower Square car park in Corfu Town. Next week is Easter Week and the first tourists are already on the island, with businesses busy preparing, and yet the local authority, in a boorish and bureaucratic manner, closed this key car park three weeks ago without providing any information about its intentions. This has resulted in exacerbating the already difficult problem with traffic in the town centre and has led to the justified reaction of residents.

'Voice - Citizens for Transparency' stands with the citizens of Corfu and demands that the local authority realise immediately the consequences of its actions and that it updates us, firstly, on the decision it has taken so that we can find out who or what is working 'behind the scenes' and what the role of the Municipal Council is and secondly, on when the Lower Square car park will reopen - as their responsibility to the old town residents requires.

'Voice - Citizens for Transparency' completely understands residents' frustration due to this irresponsible policy and it  is completely out of the question that there will be any kind of agreement with any private contractor for the car park without all the legalities being observed.

The recent decision by the Council of State to restore authority to the Municipal Council gives you the final opportunity to demonstrate your democratic intentions."
