CORFU. Letter of the Corfu Federation of Tourist Accommodation Owners to the Ministers of Interior, Finance, Development and Tourism.
The Federation, in order to inform the responsible Ministries about the tragic situation of the businesses affected by the “Ballos” storm, sent today a letter to the Ministers of Interior, Finance, Development and Tourism. It called for an immediate and decisive intervention in order to speed up the procedures for repairing the damage caused by the severe weather conditions in Corfu, starting from the recording of the damage – which the Ionian Islands Region and the Central and South Corfu Municipalities have already started, but not at the desired pace, which has caused the concern of both the affected colleagues and the residents of these areas.
The businesspeople stressed in the letter that the state must provide support for the sector’s businesses, starting from the suspension of payment of their obligations to the state (tax office and insurance funds):
"Let us not forget that these are businesses that have been literally destroyed and belong to an industry that is the core of the local economy and society.
Our fellow tourist accommodation businesspeople have struggled over the last two years to get back on their feet and avoid closing down their businesses. But if they do not receive help by the state immediately, this will be inevitable.
We hope that our demands will be understood and that the state will make the necessary interventions, so that we, as a local community, can overcome all together the difficulties that we have had to face during the last few years. So far, we have succeeded, but the state should also stand by us in our efforts to create the necessary conditions for a better tomorrow.”
