CORFU. Following opposition from local residents Mayor Kostas Lessis left - Support from North Corfu Mayor

The South Corfu Municipal Council had scheduled a meeting at the Temploni landfill, in order to discuss the issue of the use of space there and waste management.

The Councillors were there to show their opposition to the refusal of SYDISA (Solid Waste Management Association) to grant a space to serve as a waste transfer station for the waste from the South.

At around 8:30a.m., Mayor Kostas Lessis met local residents who had symbolically closed the landfill, as a protest firstly against the general situation and secondly against the South Corfu Municipality Council meeting, which they considered to be a provocation.

Temploni Cultural Society did not participate in the protest. After intense arguments, the Mayor left ,stating that he would not give up these efforts. “We will build the South Corfu waste transfer station, but until that happens, we are requesting a temporary solution here since we are co-owners. Some people refused. The discussion will be continued soon.”

North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris expressed his support for Kostas Lessis and said that serious crimes have been committed at the Temploni landfill for a long time now.
