CORFU. "What΄s happening with the study for the new landfill? What΄s going to happen with the waste bales? Why are we transporting 2,500 tons instead of 4,000 and at a greater cost?"

Corfu Waste Watch has issued a statement following Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality's agreement regarding transportation of waste to DIADYMA in Kozani.

The statement includes a series of questions and concerns:

"The new agreement by the Central Corfu Municipality to transport another 2,500 tons of waste from the island this year was recently announced.

First of all, in her statements we can't help but observe the Mayor's wishes regarding the waste facility which will solve all our problems.

Once again we must point out that as a watch committee the reason that we insisted right from the beginning on the need for the waste transportation is that it gives us time to organise a modern system of sorting at source and recycling the island's waste.

We have said repeatedly that the construction of the waste management facility won't solve the problems. The reason that the transportation of the waste is necessary is because there is no licensed residue landfill and has nothing to do with the waste management facility.

There are also other important questions that remain unanswered; What is happening with the study for the location of the new residue landfill? What is going to happen with waste baling? What is going to happen with the waste bales that have to be removed from Temploni and Lefkimmi? What is going to be done about the residue that is leaking from the treatment plant and ending up in the water table in Temploni?

Is there any kind of procedure underway to promote sorting at source and recycling in accordance with modern systems of waste management or are we going to adopt the obsolete technologies of mixed waste facilities with waste incineration - technologies that are being abandoned throughout Europe as they are problematic and the EU has ceased to fund them?

There also needs to be clarification regarding what will happen with the tons of waste that won't be transported from the island. Will they also be baled? Is mixed waste going to remain at Temploni? And what process will be followed?

As regards the transportation of the waste, despite the rejoicing, nothing new was announced. The announcement that another 2,500 tons will be transported this year simply shows that the procedure is continuing with the same problems that have existed up to now - and instead of 4,000 tons, which DIADYMA in Kozani is able to accept, we are sending 2,500.

We have, however, heard nothing about how much this is going to cost. We researched the matter and found that tenders were invited and, in essence, only one was received - once again from Enact. But this time the cost will be €83.75 instead of €76, which was the price quoted the first time round."
