ATHENS. The fact was accepted with satisfaction by local authority representatives, thus refuting rumours about alleged political motives to get involved in handling the waste here.

The government MP informed the president of FODSA, Ionian Islands Regional Governor, Yiannis Trepeklis regarding the government's decision not to build the waste treatment plant in Corfu and Temploni. As part of the implementation of national spatial planning regulations for waste management facilities and concerning Corfu, the islands' waste will be directed to the Dodoni facility. This general solution was also preceded by the recent decision regarding the waste from North Corfu.

The mainland plant, next to Eleftherohori in Dodoni, is roughly halfway between Igoumenitsa and Ioannina and obviously closer to Corfu (and Ioannina) than, for example, Arta and Preveza. With the inclusion of overall management (processing and sanitary landfill) under Epirus local authority, the way is also open for Corfu to buy shares and have the Corfu municipalities as partners in the mainland infrastructure, thus mitigating the cost of overall management.

The fact was accepted with satisfaction by local authority representatives, thus refuting rumours about alleged political motives to get involved in handling the waste here.

The creation of a Transfer Station in the South now remains o proceed, as the central and northern municipalities will be served by the Temploni Transfer Station, and of course, the much-discussed restoration of the area's abused environment.
