CORFU. Firefighters and volunteers fought the fire in Portes, Perithia for several hours before it was completely extinguished early this morning.

The battle to put out the fire was made more difficult by the strong winds in the area and those involved said it was a "great feat" to put it out without the assistance of firefighting planes.

The fire was  brought completely under control in the early hours of the morning after having burnt approximately 15 stremmas of farm and woodland.

Nine fire engines and 2 units of 12 and 18 firefighters took part along with a Hellenic Rescue Team vehicle with 4 volunteers and 8 volunteers from the Special Search & Rescue Team (EMED). North Corfu Civil Protection Service also took part with 3 vehicles and 6 men and Central Corfu Municipality sent a water truck.

Everyone was on the alert yesterday due to the high level of fire risk (Level 4) and the Fire Department put all its vehicles on general alert and three firefighting units were on patrol in North, Central and South Corfu.

Voluntary community firefighting units also patrolled their areas of responsibility and Municipal Civil Protection Services were on standby.
