Cooperation between Fire Department and volunteers

CORFU. "In the effort to ensure fire safety in the region, ΄no one is superfluous,΄ as long as the help is provided ΄within the framework defined by the law.΄"
In an effort to ease tensions between the Fire Department and the volunteers, a meeting was held on Monday, August 4. The Fire Department Commander, Nikos Kollas, met with the Board of Directors of the ALMKE Club, in the presence of the President and Secretary of the Corfu Firefighters’ Union.
According to Mr. Kollas’ statement, the discussion was “constructive and sincere.” He stated that in the effort to ensure fire safety in the region, “no one is superfluous,” as long as the assistance is provided “within the framework defined by the law.” He also expressed his satisfaction with the Club’s contribution, describing their binocular surveillance as “welcome and very important.”
For its part, the Corfu branch of the Hellenic Rescue Team, also issued a statement titled “A Positive Development in the Relationship Between the Fire Department and the Motorcycle Club.” The team stated it was “particularly pleased” that “reason and the common interest prevailed.” It was stated that cooperation becomes possible when roles and intentions are understood, and that “it was not unreasonable” to believe that the Fire Department welcomes the help of citizens, provided it is well-intentioned and within regulatory boundaries.
The statement concluded with the hope that this cooperation will continue and serve as an example for other initiatives in the future, as “everyone can work together harmoniously, each from their own position.”
