CORFU. The approval of the elevation survey by the Karamanlis Ministerial Decision fulfils the necessary conditions for the work in Kassiopi to commence - which Kyriakos Mitsotakis intends to support with his visit here.
Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas confirmed to Enimerosi that the PM wants to visit the island. It is expected that he will come just for a day on one of the last two weekends in June as there is a planned visit to Santorini next weekend on the 13th.
With his presence on the Cycladic Islands and Corfu the PM will want to help promote the iconic Greek destinations at the start of the tourist season which has been delayed due to the pandemic.
Erimitis
The expected visit from the PM is also said to be due to his wish to give support to the Erimitis investment, which has symbolic significance as it is the first privatisation by TAIPED (Hellenic Republic Asset Development) in accordance with the country's memorandum obligations.
When the dispute broke out between the Government and North Corfu Municipality regarding the approval of the elevation survey MP Stefanos Gikas told Enimerosi of the Government's determination that the investment go ahead, which is underlined by the Prime Minister's desire to visit the area in Northeast Corfu to demonstrate his support. This is an especially symbolic gesture given the opposition not only from the local authority but also community organisations and other noted property owners in the area.
Cutting the Gordian Knot, the Government removed responsibility for the approval of such studies from the local authority and took it upon itself. Just last week (28/5) the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Konstantinos Karamanlis signed the appoval decision for the elevation road survey for the project 'Development of Tourist Holiday Village in Kassiopi Corfu' in Erimitis.
