CORFU. Invitation to a meeting at the Old Psychiatric Hospital on Tuesday 2 June at 19:00 to discuss the protection of Corfu΄s natural environment.
Corfu Environmental Protection Association is holding a meeting at the Old Psychiatric Hospital on Tuesday 2 June at 19:00 to discuss joint activities for the protection of the natural environment, which is under threat, according to the Association, from the new environmental legislation.
The invitation to local organisations and individuals is as follows:
"Acknowledging the special significance of Corfu nature for the quality of life, our natural and cultural heritage and identity as Corfiots and having witnessed the continuous degradation of the natural environment for decades, we, the members of various organisations and groups have begun a process of discussion and cooperation on matters that are of concern to us.
The following are our basic assumptions:
The environment is one of the most important public resources and is a common resource which it is our obligation to safeguard for future generations.
The exceptional beauty and biodiversity of Corfu nature is important not only for the well-being of the island and its residents but also to attract high-quality tourism, which is so needed here.
Economic development is not an end in itself but needs to progress in harmony with natural capital and respect the needs of the local communities.
What has prompted the discussion is the recent environmental legislation for the following reasons:
- It will do irreparable damage to our heritage by promoting 'investments'. It facilitates plans to destroy Erimitis (destruction of paths, removing responsibility from the Municipal Council), enables sections of the Issos and Lake Korision area to be put up for sale (leading to construction work and development of auxiliary facilities for drilling companies) and in general facilitates construction work in every woodland, shoreline and beach on the island.
- It creates a vague and unclear situation as regards waste management (e.g. conversion of the management organisation into a regional organisation in the form of a limited liability company which may increase immunity and further weaken the municipalities.
- It further diminishes the participation of local organisations in the management of protected areas.
- It goes against national and European legislation for the protection of the environment and all the related agreements at a time when the deterioration of the environment and the excessive exploitation of nature by humans has been checked even by the pandemic.
- It has been supplemented by the removal of the Regional General Director for Infrastructure and Transport who was known for his environmental awareness and in the past obstructed the signing off on ventures that would have destroyed the environment.
For all the above reasons we call on groups and individuals to come together with the following objectives:
- To set up a 'discussion group' and immediate mobilisation to protect the Corfu environment from any kind of damaging intervention.
- Discuss working together and cooperating with other groups in Greece in order to make every possible effort to abolish this legislation.
Proper and sustainable management can bring benefits for all. For our children and for our island.
