CORFU. A fashion and zero waste statement!

The clothing of the 'Kerkyra 180' Municipal Councillor drew everyone's attention when she arrived for the Council meeting at Mon Repos. There was a reason behind her choice of clothes - the issue of zero waste was due to be discussed at the meeting.

Corfu has lived through a nightmare over the last few years with all the rubbish on the island. However, the one positive consequence has been the increased public awareness regarding recycling and sorting at source. A large number of Green Spots have been set up by volunteers and members of the public have put in a huge amount of time and effort. The result of this increased awareness could be seen in the pre-election promises made by all the parties regarding 'green' waste management which gained them seats on the Municipal Council.

At Monday's meeting four parties proposed the adoption of the zero waste principle - those led by Giorgos Kaloudis, Chrysanthos Sarlis and the single-councillor parties with Maria Dri and Spyros Poulis.

The Municipal Councillor from 'Kerkyra 180' took things a step further by putting the principle of re-use into practice. She wore a jacket that was made from the plastic packaging of water bottles used by Corfiots - due to the water supply problems.

Just to remind ourselves, the Corfu traditional costume made from waste for last year's Carnival by Sinies Green Spot was seen all over the internet. It 's plastic - so it should last for another 500 years or so...
