CORFU. The frigate Admiral Makarov from the Black Sea Fleet has been in Corfu Port since Friday.

The Russian Ministry of Defence has announced that the vessel is in Corfu in honour of the "liberation of the islands by Admiral Ushakov", who, in March 1799, took advantage of the Ionian Islands residents' displeasure with the French and took over the islands. The Russian presence led to the establishment in 1800 of the first modern Greek State following the end of the Byzantine Era - the United States of the Ionian Islands.

The frigate Admiral Makarov was commissioned on 27 December, 2017 and belongs to the Admiral Grigorovic class. Its armaments include 1 x 100mm naval gun, 8 (2 × 4) UKSK VLS cells for Kalibr anti-ship/cruise missiles, 24 (2 × 12) 3S90M VLS cells for 9M317M surface-to-air-missiles, 2 AK-630 CIWS, 1 RBU-6000 rocket launcher and 2 × double 533 mm torpedo tubes.

The Russian frigate docked in Corfu Port on Friday as part of the 17th Hellenic-Russian Week - which began in October 2002, when the monument to the legendary Admiral Fyodor Ushakov was unveiled in Corfu Town. Ushakov played a key role in the liberation of the Ionian Islands and the establishment of the United States of the Ionian Islands.

The frigate will be open to the public at the following times:

Saturday 28/9: 17:00 - 19:00
Sunday 29/9: 10:00 - 12:00
Monday 30/9: 15:00 - 17:00
Tuesday 1/10: 10:00 - 12:00

The ship is scheduled to depart on Wednesday at 10:00.
