New Mayor Meropi Ydraiou gets update on Education

CORFU. The new Mayor for Central Corfu and the Diapontia Islands Meropi Ydraiou is getting updated on all matters before she officially takes over on 1 September.

The new Mayor met with the Regional Director of Education to get updated on the problems she will have to deal with.

There was a wide-ranging discussion on the problem with school buildings bearing in mind the adoption of compulsory 2-year pre-school education.

On her recent visit to Athens Ms Ydraiou said that funds for Municipalities needed to increase so that they could deal with the extra costs for compulsory 2-year pre-school education.

She talked about the new local authority's intention to start recycling programmes at primary schools and to support and srengthen the Lifelong Learning Programme.

They also discussed the problem of unsuitable buildings being used for the special needs school and other schools and Ms. Ydraiou said that this was a priority for the new local authority.

It was a positive discussion and there was a mutual desire to work closely together and deal with any problems together for the benefit of pupils and the academic community in general.
