CORFU. The events in New York to celebrate the anniversary of the Greek rebirth will take place on 14 April and will include the Corfu ΄Mantzaros΄ Philharmonic Band this year.
Welcome to 4 August 1936...and even further in the past!
The Federation of Greek Associations has included all the symbols of the Greek 'Great Idea' (irredentism) in its poster for the parade to celebrate the 25th of March with the 'Mantzaros' Band - who obviously aren't responsible for the poster - in the centre.
Symbols from the National Youth Organization of the 4th August dictatorship and references to the liberation of North Epirus could prove to be especially toxic at this time. The celebratory events for the anniversary of Greek independence could promote modern peaceful Greek policies or on the other hand they could attempt to revive irredentist conflicts from the past - always dangerous in the troubled Balkans.
The question is - what does the Federation want to do? And what will those who have been invited to participate do - will they accept this? We will find out soon enough.
