NEW YORK. Warm and emotional reception from the Greek diaspora.

'Mantzaros' Philharmonic Band from Corfu, which is at present in the USA, made one of the most significant appearances in the history of the Society.

Following an invitation from the Greek diaspora, 77 musicians and conductor Socrates Anthis along with members of the Society Board and Corfu Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos travelled to New York to take part in the diaspora events.

On Friday 12 April, following the raising of the Greek flag at Bowling Green in South Manhattan, 'Mantzaros' Philharmonic Band put on a concert in the Amphitheatre of Aviation High School on Long Island.

The band performed works from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, Zorba by Mikis Theodorakis, songs by Manos Hatzidakis, Michalis Souyioul, Giorgos Mouzakis and Giorgos Katsaros, works by Franco Cesarini (Greek Folk Song Suite), Hardy Mertens (Cyclades), Spyros Mavropoulos (Memories of Cyprus) and Dionysios Visvardi (Travelling in Epirus) as well as works by Yiannis Markopoulos.

The band was also accompanied by mezzo soprano Ariana Kris from Canada, whose family come from Corfu.
