CORFU. The lawsuit cites continuing damage to the environment.

Temploni Cultural Society filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against the Mayor of Corfu Kostas Nikolouzos, Deputy Mayor and President of the Solid Waste Management Association (SYDISA) Spyros Aspiotis, board members of the Association and any other responsible persons and bodies. The charges are continuing damage to the environment during all the operations including the interim management.

Last May the Court imposed an 8-month suspended prison sentence on the Mayor and Deputy Mayor for attempting to deposit waste in the satured cell at the landfill. Following the sentencing the three old cells were sealed and the problem of finding a space for the waste has still not been solved along with the problem of refuse collection which is being urgently carried out by contractors.

The Temploni Society has repeatedly published photos of a new 'unofficial' area being used to deposit refuse, which is supposed to be used for baling. The operation of the baling facility was very slow and this led to the creation of the so-called '4th cell' for which yesterday's lawsuit was filed.

The Society has also asked a team from the Environmental Service and Health Administration to come and carry out an inspection.
