CORFU. The marathon Council meeting on the sole subject of the division of Corfu into separate municipalities started at 4pm and finished at 2am.
After various trials and tribulations the Council meeting finally concluded. Following recriminations between councillors, breaks to allow people to calm down, interventions and protests from Lefkimmi residents, the final vote came out in favour of the division of the island into more than three municipalities.
Nevertheless, all the party leaders were against the proposition, mainly because the prerequisites to make the division sustaniable aren't in place at the moment - as Babis Haralambous said: "Not this way, into the unknown with Hope our only vessel".
The parties 'Laiki Sispirosi' (Mr. Haralambous) and 'Kerkyra na Zeis' (Mr. Trepeklis) walked out of the meeting. In the end, the marathon meeting on the sole subject of the division of Corfu into separate municipalities, which had started at 4pm, finished at 2am. Of the councillors still remaining at that time,15 voted in favour and 11 against with 1 abstention. The decision is of an advisory nature and not binding.
