1.2 million Euros for biodiversity projects in the Ionian Islands

CORFU. Following the signature of Regional Governor Theodoros Galiatsatos yesterday two new biodiversity projects have been included in the ΄Protection of the Environment and Sustainable Development΄ programme which is part of the Ionian Islands Business Programme 2014-2020
The total budget is 1,201,460 Euros.
The first project is 'The protection and promotion of biodiversity, ecosystems and areas of natural beauty in the Ionian Islands Region through 'smart' systems of tracking, recording, digital mapping and pressure management'. This will be a collaboration between the Ionian Islands Region, Benaki Phytopathological Institute, the Ionian University and the Technology and Research Foundation. The budget is 875,460 Euros.
The aim of the project is to track, record, map and develop 'smart' tools to monitor and promote species which are part of the natural habitats of the region.
The completion date for the project is 30/6/22
The second project is 'Recording and presentation of the geotopes and geo trails in Cephalonia-Ithaca Geopark with a view to its inclusion in UNESCO Geoparks'. The project manager is The Management Body of Ainos National Park in Cephalonia. The budget is 326,000 Euros.
The aim of the project is to create a geopark in Cephaloni-Ithaca to be included in the UNESCO European and Global Geopark Network.
The completion date for the project is 31/12/21
The projects are being funded by the EU European Regional Development Fund and the Greek State.
