Barack Obama exhorted those on the ship's bulkhead, "Even the least service and the simplest act of kindness is a way of honouring what we have lost and regaining the spirit of unity after 9/11."
The ship is an amphibious transport dock (which can reach a speed of 22 knots) and everything can be found on board - helicopters, heavy transport vehicles, armoured cars and speedboats. It has repair workshops and everything else that can be found at a military port refuelling dock.
According to Wikipedia, the fifth San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, is the fifth ship of the United States Navy to be named after the state of New York. It has a crew of 360 and can carry up to 700 Marines.
Shortly after 11 September 2001, Governor of New York George E. Pataki wrote a letter to Secretary of the Navy Gordon R. England requesting that the Navy bestow the name "New York" on a surface warship involved in the War on Terrorism in honour of the victims of the September 11 attacks. The request was approved on 28 August 2002.
The 'New York' was under construction in New Orleans at the time of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
