CORFU. The Mayor of Corfu, Kostas Nikolouzos, welcomed a group of students and teachers from countries collaborating in the “Green schools 2.0 for sustainable future” Erasmus programme at the Old Town Hall yesterday.

The Mayor thanked the teachers and students for their visit and expressed his satisfaction that the European programme was dealing with environmental issues that are of serious concern to modern society. “You will teach us,” he stressed and then gave a short presentation of our island’s history.

“Green schools 2.0 for sustainable future” is concerned with the protection of the environment, water, air pollution and ‘green’ practices in general that need to be implemented in schools. These programmes give students a unique opportunity to travel and collaborate with children from other countries.

Italy, Spain, Bulgaria and of course Greece are participating in the ‘MARE’ programme and Italy, Romania, Portugal, FYROM, Poland and Greece are participating in ‘GREEN SCHOOLS’. Skripero High School is participating in and organizing two programmes. It is worth noting that only 9% of the Greek schools participating in such programmes are the organizers.

From 25th February to 2nd March teachers from European countries participating in the programmes plus 20 students from Italy, Romania, Portugal, FYROM and Poland are being hosted here.

At the end of the meeting Mr. Nikolouzos and the visitors exchanged commemorative gifts and he wished them good luck and a pleasant stay in Corfu.
