CORFU. On Tuesday 13th a team from the Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration (IGME) inspected the subsidence in Akrokefalou, Temploni in order to re-evaluate the situation.

The team re-examined the old (2008) land subsidence in the area and the recent one which occurred in January 2018 and caused considerable damage to the road network.
On the following day, 14th February, a meeting was held with the Corfu Mayor, Kostas Nikolouzos, the Deputy Mayor for Technical Services, Andreas Goulis, other municipal representatives and the IGME team. IGME presented its findings and there followed a discussion about the best ways to deal with cases of subsidence.
The following were agreed:
  • IGME will carry out a geophysical study of the area where the subsidence occurred in January in order to locate any underground cavities and to assess the danger. Until the study is completed any drilling for water will be suspended and traffic will be prohibited in the immediate area.
  • The municipality will organize a meeting with the participation of IGME to update local residents on the situation.
  • IGME will draw up a proposal for a research project to find any similar problems in the general area and assess the danger.
