Police traffic measures successful in the Ionian Islands
No road accidents with fatalities or serious injuries.
The Ionian Islands Regional Police consider that the measures they took to prevent road accidents over the holiday period were successful as there were no fatalities or serious injuries.
In their press release they claim that police presence on the roads over the holiday period (22nd December – 7th January) played a major role in dealing with dangerous driving and problems with the flow of traffic.
There was a total of two accidents which led to slight injuries for three people – two in Corfu and one in Lefkada.
The following are the results of checks carried out by traffic police in Corfu, Lefkada, Cephalonia and Zakynthos:
139 police units checked 3,603 vehicles. There were 1,027 violations of the Highway Code – 632 in Corfu, 133 in Cephalonia, 161 in Zakynthos and 101 in Lefkada.
The main offences were as follows:
- - 72 driving under the influence
- - 111 speeding
- - 30 not wearing crash helmets
- - 19 using a mobile phone whilst driving
- - 25 driving in the opposite lane
- - 42 not stopping at red traffic lights
- - 45 without MOT certification
