Significant drop in number of road accidents in Ionian Islands in August

CORFU. There were 14 this year compared to 33 in the same month last year.

Traffic police data shows that there was a significant drop in the number of road accidents in the Ionian Islands in August this year, with 14 compared to the same month last year.

Road accidents

There were 14 road accidents in Corfu, Lefkada, Cephalonia and Zakynthos in August.

- 3 accidents with fatalities (3 in August '21)
- 2 accidents with serious injuries (2 in August '21)
- 9 accidents with minor injuries (28 in August '21)

There were 21 people killed or injured in the above accidents compared to 41 in the same month last year;

- 3 deaths (3 in August '21)
- 2 serious injuries (3 in August '21)
- 16 minor injuries (35 in August '21)

The main causes of the accidents were as follows:

- Driver was distracted
- Violation of right of way
- Not maintaining a safe distance between vehicles
- Speeding
- Violation of road signs
- Driving on the wrong side of the road

Driving offences

In August there were 5,272 driving offences, including the following:

- 107 driving under the influence
- 413 speeding
- 685 not wearing crash helmet
- 107 not wearing seat belts
- 45 using mobile phone whilst driving
- 50 driving on the wrong side of the road
- 15 running red lights
- 9 for dangerous driving
- 230 without driving licences
- 81 with uninsured vehicles
- 105 without MOT

There were 191 offences of parking in Special Needs spaces and 115 arrests - 97 for driving without a licence and 18 for driving under the influence.
