CORFU. The figures for January 2022 have been released regarding road accidents and driving offences in the Ionian Islands.
The Ionian Islands Regional Police Department has published the figures for road accidents and driving offences in the region in January 2022.
Road accidents
There were 8 road accidents in January in Corfu, Lefkada, Cephalonia and Zakynthos compared to 10 in the same month in 2021.
- There were no fatal accidents, compared to one in 2021.
- There were no serious accidents.
- There were 8 accidents with minor injuries, compared to 9 in 2021.
There were 9 people injured in road accidents, compared to 12 in 2021.
Main causes of road accidents:
- Driver was distracted
- Violation of right of way
- Not maintaining proper distance between vehicles
- Speeding
- Running red lights
- Driving on wrong side of road
Police checks
There were 1,701 driving offences in January, including the following:
- 30 for driving under the influence
- 259 for speeding
- 93 for not using helmet
- 86 for not using seat belt
- 25 for using mobile phone whilst driving
- 42 for driving on the wrong side of the road
- 113 for driving without a licence
- 30 for driving without insurance
- 88 for MOT offences
There were also 43 offences of parking in Special Needs spaces and 36 arrests - 27 for driving without a licence and 9 for driving under the influence.
