CORFU. The known plastic bollards were placed in the summer as a measure against traffic that is quite heavy in this area.
The "experiment" with the bollards placed in the summer at NAOK was successful. Thus, the Corfu Traffic Police has already recommended that they remain there for better regulation of the traffic.
The known plastic bollards were placed in the summer as a measure against traffic that is quite heavy in this area due to the buses and large vehicles that are not able to move because of the parked vehicles on either side of the shore road.
They are still there
With the bollards that are still there, the road from the Ionian Academy to Dimokratias Avenue is closed to traffic, while turning to Akadimias St. is also not allowed.
Although the measure was considered temporary at the time, the possibility of making it permanent is now being considered, due to its effectiveness. Both the Ionian Islands Region and the Central Corfu Municipality are positive towards this decision.
However, the Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu Kostas Zorbas told Enimerosi that there are procedures required. "First of all, the Regional Council must take a decision and the Central Corfu Municipality should be asked, in order for the process to be able to start as it requires a traffic regulations study and an approval by the Decentralised Administration", he said, noting that if it is possible and until all the necessary procedures are completed, the bollards will remain there.
Illegal parking
Many drivers, however, do not hesitate to park their cars there illegally, using the bollards as an extension of the pavement on Akadimias St. However, checks are being carried out by the Traffic Police and in cases of illegal parking, fines are imposed.
