CORFU. The seamen have requested a meeting with the Prime Minister, during his visit to Corfu on 4-5 December in Corfu, as their problems still remain unresolved.

The last strike was suspended as a ‘sign of goodwill’, the union pointed out, allowing time for the Ministry for Mercantile Marine and Island Policy and the ship-owners to come to a decision.

The union’s announcement.

Despite the fact that we have held multiple meetings with the Minister, Panayiotis Kouroupli, the General Secretary, Dionisis Kalamatianos, the Regional administration, the Seamen’s Association and the Ship Owners’ Association, our problems still remain unresolved. We would like to point out that our last two strikes were suspended in order to allow time for negotiations.

Basically, the collective contracts for domestic ferry crews have not been ratified and work demands remain unresolved.

We would like you to inform us if there has been any recent progress concerning our requests so that we can come to a decision on our position. If there is no satisfactory solution this week, the strike which was temporarily suspended as a sign of goodwill will resume in early December.  We would like to let you know that we have requested a meeting with Alexis Tsipras during his forthcoming visit to Corfu in order to inform him of the seamen’s demands in Corfu, Igoumenitsa , Lefkimi, Paxoi  and the Diapontia Islands.
